Description:Verteporfin is a drug that is used in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration. It is an organic compound that has two isomers, namely (S)- and (R)-verteporfin. The drug is injected intravenously and causes temporary damage to the choroid, which allows new blood vessels to grow. Verteporfin may also be used as an adjunct to photodynamic therapy for the treatment of choroidal neovascularization and occlusion. Verteporfin may be administered in combination with other drugs such as benzoporphyrin derivative for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration during phase I/II clinical trials.
