Valine is one of the 20 amino acids commonly found in proteins. Valine is a modified form of the amino acid l-valine that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and may be used as a medicine. Valine tert-butyl ester hydrochloride (VTBE) is an alkyl ester that has been shown to inhibit the activity of metalloproteinases, which are enzymes that break down proteins in the body. It has also been shown to have medicinal uses in the diagnosis of diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. VTBE may be activated by tripartite motifs and lead to structural studies on exotoxins.
