Vidarabine monohydrate (Vid) is a natural compound that has minimal toxicity in humans. It inhibits the polymerase chain reaction by binding to the enzyme DNA polymerase and prevents RNA synthesis. Vidarabine has antiviral activity, which may be due to its inhibition of viral gene expression by blocking the synthesis of messenger RNA. This drug also inhibits cellular protein synthesis and induces neuronal death. The drug has been shown to be effective in treating HIV-1-infected patients, as well as preventing herpes zoster in immunocompetent individuals. Vidarabine monohydrate is a model system for studying the mechanisms of action of antiviral drugs.
