N-Vinylphthalimide is the monomer for a polyvinylpyrrolidone synthesis that can be used to create polymer films. It is also a reactive compound, which reacts with palladium complexes in the presence of ethyl diazoacetate to form vinylpyrrolidone. N-Vinylphthalimide has significant antifungal activity and can be used as an alternative to amphotericin B. This compound was synthesized by reacting hydrogen chloride with sodium hydrogen sulfate in the presence of fatty acids. The reaction mechanism involves acylation, followed by hydrolysis of the ester product and hydrogenation of the resultant carboxylic acid. N-Vinylphthalimide's antifungal activity has been shown using a turbidimetric method that detects changes in light scattering induced by fungal growth.
