- Withaferine A
Withaferin A is a natural compound that belongs to the group of diterpenoids. It is a potent inhibitor of DNA polymerase, with minimal toxicity and no cytotoxicity at concentrations up to 5 μM. Withaferin A has been shown to have antibacterial efficacy against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus subtilis. Withaferin A binds to the promoter region of the bcl-2 gene, inhibiting transcription and translation. The binding of withaferin A causes an increase in tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) levels and reduces the expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6). This molecule also has inhibitory properties on neural cells by binding to response elements.
