Xanthine oxidase is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine, and of xanthine to uric acid. The human liver is the most important site of xanthine oxidase activity in the body. Xanthine oxidase can be found in other tissues as well, such as human heart, muscle, and kidney. Xanthine oxidase has a lipolytic activity that can be measured using kinetic data. The human metabolism of xanthine oxidase has been shown to produce hydrogen peroxide and organic acids such as formic acid and acetic acid when it is exposed to chlorinated compounds like chlorine atom or selenium compounds.
