- Xanthuric acid
Xanthurenic acid is a metabolite of tryptophan, which is the precursor to serotonin. Xanthurenic acid has been shown to have strong antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi. It has also been shown to have anticancer properties in animal models of colon cancer. Xanthurenic acid inhibits mitochondrial functions and affects energy metabolism. This compound has also been shown to inhibit the activity of many enzymes in human serum, including some that are involved in blood clotting and other physiological processes. Xanthurenic acid may be an effective drug target for treatment of bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
