Zirconium can be combined with other metals to produce alloys with desired properties. The biological properties of zirconium are related to its chemical stability and resistance to oxidation. The reaction mechanism for zirconium compounds is based on the formation of metal carbonyls. This metal has been shown to have human serum levels that are low enough so that it does not interfere with blood coagulation or platelet aggregation reactions. Zirconium has been studied extensively using x-ray diffraction data collected from crystals grown from human serum.
