Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid that is found in the macula of the eye. It has been shown to have antioxidant properties and may prevent or slow down eye disorders such as macular degeneration, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration. Zeaxanthin also has been shown to help maintain the physiological effects of vitamin A in the retina, which is important for vision. Zeaxanthin is bound to proteins and lipids in the human body and its release into the bloodstream is limited. This means that it does not accumulate in tissues, but instead leaves through excretion from the body. Zeaxanthin can be extracted from plants such as corn (zea mays) and spinach (spinacia oleracea), or it can be synthesized chemically from fats or oils.
