Zeatin is an inhibitor that binds to the active site of the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase, preventing the synthesis of deoxyribonucleotides. Zeatin is used to inhibit the growth of bacteria, viruses, and fungi in cell cultures. The reaction mechanism for zeatin is inhibition of bacterial ribonucleotide reductase. It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding reversibly to the active site of this enzyme. Antiviral activity has been observed against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and human cytomegalovirus (CMV). Zeatin also inhibits replication of HIV-1 in vitro. Multiple-reaction monitoring assays have been developed for studying its effects on HIV-1 and HSV-1. This drug has also been shown to be effective against Trichophyton rubrum, a fungus that can cause ringworm infections in humans. The optimum concentration for zeatin is 0.5 mM,
