Sodium taurolithocholate is a substrate for cholesterol esterase and an inhibitor of the enzyme. It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of cholesterol esterase in rat hepatocytes, with optimum concentrations at 1-10 mM. This compound has been used to enhance the function of cells, including colony-stimulating factor (CSF) production by human monocytes and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) production by mouse macrophages. Sodium taurolithocholate has also been shown to inhibit cell growth in prostate cancer cells without affecting healthy cells. The molecule can bind to bile acids and may have an interaction with drugs that are metabolized by the liver, such as warfarin or phenytoin.
