Hexyl hexanoate is a volatile organic compound that is a liquid at room temperature and pressure. It can be prepared by the esterification of hexanoic acid and hexanol. Hexyl hexanoate has been shown to be an effective polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primer and also has fluorescence properties that can be used for surface methodology and solid phase microextraction. Hexyl hexanoate binds to odorant receptors in the nose, which may lead to its use as an artificial fruit flavoring or as a fragrance. Hexyl hexanoate has been shown to bind to ethyl decanoate and caproic acid with similar binding constants.
