The fatty acid group on this molecule makes it easily soluble in water and hydrolysis occurs at about pH 7. Dicamba methyl ester is biosynthesized by an abiotic process from magnesium oxide and fatty acid. It can also be synthesized from its precursor, 2-chloro-N-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)acetamide by reacting with chloromethyl ether in a hydrolysis process.
