Phenyloxolan-2-one is a metabolite of glutethimide. It has been shown to produce dose-dependent sedation and hypnosis in rats. It is also a potent inhibitor of the enzyme gamma-aminobutyric acid transaminase, which is responsible for the conversion of GABA to succinic semialdehyde, and may inhibit the formation of gamma-aminobutyric acid from glutamate. Phenyloxolan-2-one can be detected in urine as a metabolite of glutethimide and has been used as an analytical tool for monitoring glutethimide use.
