Prometaphanine is a stephania alkaloid that is found in the plant Stephania japonica. It has been shown to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Prometaphanine has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of bacterial DNA by binding to the enzyme DNA gyrase, which maintains the integrity of bacterial DNA. This results in cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis, which is vital for bacterial growth. Prometaphanine also inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, which may be responsible for its anti-inflammatory activities.
