Isovalerylcarnitine is a diagnostic agent that can be used to measure carnitine levels in biological samples, such as maternal blood. Isovalerylcarnitine has been shown to be elevated in patients with metabolic disorders, including carnitine deficiency, and ethylmalonic aciduria. It is also used to measure the levels of isovalerylcarnitine and trigeminal nerve function in patients with trigeminal neuralgia. Isovalerylcarnitine can be measured using LC-MS/MS methods, which are highly specific and accurate. This test is most often performed on blood serum or plasma samples.
