Squalene 2,3:22,23-dioxide is a molecule that inhibits the enzyme squalene epoxidase in the liver and other tissues. This enzyme is involved in cholesterol synthesis. Squalene 2,3:22,23-doxide binds to the active site of this enzyme and prevents it from binding to its substrate. Squalene 2,3:22,23-dioxide has been shown to inhibit cholesterol synthesis in cultured cells by inhibiting cyclase activity and reducing the amount of unsaturated alkyl groups on fatty acid chains. The molecule has also been shown to reduce high cholesterol levels in animal models by inhibiting cholesterol synthesis.
