Cyclobendazole is a benzimidazole derivative that is used as an anthelmintic drug. It enters the worm's body and prevents the synthesis of ergosterol, which is a component of the cell membrane that protects the cell from harmful substances. Cyclobendazole disrupts the hydrogen bonds by forming new covalent bonds with the DNA bases, leading to programmed death in parasites and worms. This drug has been shown to be effective against inflammatory bowel disease and cancer in clinical studies. Cyclobendazole has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory activity in animal models for inflammatory bowel disease, colitis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
