It is soluble in water, but not in organic solvents. 2-Methyl-1-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid has been shown to be an attractant for pyrylium ion and a substrate for the enzyme cyclohexane carboxylase. The compound is also found in plants, including leaves of the Acacia tree and bark of the Eucalyptus tree. This monounsaturated fatty acid has been shown to have high chiral purity and low levels of formic acid impurities, making it suitable as an additive in products such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and foodstuffs.
