Bambuterol is a synthetic beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that has been used as a bronchodilator for the treatment of asthma. It is also used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other lung diseases. Bambuterol was first synthesized in 1965 and its structure was determined by X-ray crystallography in 1967. It has been shown that bambuterol binds to the β-adrenoreceptor on the surface of cells, stimulating catecholamine release from secretory vesicles within the cell. This leads to an increase in cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels, which causes smooth muscle relaxation and bronchodilation. Bambuterol has also been shown to have some cardiac effects, including tachycardia and increased heart rate. These effects can be reduced by taking bambuterol with glycol ethers or esters such as propylene glycol or ethyl acetate.
