Clomazone is a systemic herbicide with a broad spectrum of activity. It is used for the control of weeds in such crops as cereals, oilseed rape, potatoes, vegetables, and ornamentals. Clomazone inhibits plant metabolism by inhibiting enzyme activities involved in the biosynthesis of essential aromatic amino acids and other biologically active compounds. The plant's growth is stunted because it cannot synthesize enough carbohydrates to support its development. Clomazone also inhibits metabolic disorders in plants caused by nutrient solution deficiency, terminal residues, or synergic effect with benzobicyclon (BBI), which has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on nuclear DNA synthesis. Consequently, clomazone works synergistically with BBI to inhibit plant metabolism and has been shown to be more effective than BBI alone in affecting target enzymes in plants.
