Methyl 2-formyl-3-hydroxybenzoate is a formylating agent that reacts with the hydroxyl group of benzene to form a methyl ester. It has been used in the production of polyphosphoric acid, and is also used in the synthesis of salicylic acid and other organic compounds. Methyl 2-formyl-3-hydroxybenzoate reacts with hexamethylenetetramine to produce hexamethylenetricarboxylic acid, which can be reacted with an alcohol to produce an ester. This reagent has been shown to have antifungal activity against Rhizoglyphus sp.
