The neurotoxicity of this drug was studied using x-ray crystallography and it was found that 3-hydroxy-3-phenylpentanamide binds with high affinity to the gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) receptor, which causes an increase in chloride ion flow into the neuron and can lead to death of the neuron.
