Ethyl 3-sulfanylbutanoate is a sulfide-containing compound that is used in the manufacture of detergents, deodorants, and perfumes. It is also used in the manufacture of sodium hydrogen sulfate, which is used as a softener and a flavoring agent in baking powder. The main use of this chemical is as a precursor to sodium bicarbonate, which can be made by reacting it with an acid to form carbon dioxide. Ethyl 3-sulfanylbutanoate has two reactive groups: one sulfur atom and one carbanion. These react with other molecules to form sulfides and disulfides respectively.
