Gurmarin is a polycyclic diterpene that can be found in the bark of the G. lucidum tree. It has been shown to bind to glutamate receptors, which are ion channels that allow ions such as calcium and sodium to pass through cell membranes. Gurmarin has been shown to activate these receptors in vitro, and knockout or over-expression of these receptors in cells can lead to changes in receptor activity. Gurmarin has also been shown to have specific binding affinity for a certain type of receptor cell, which are cells with cation channels that may be involved in taste perception. The receptor binding site on the gurmarin molecule is thought to correspond with the sweet taste sensation.
