Methyl 5-bromo-4-methoxy-2-methylbenzoate is a non-nucleoside inhibitor of the RNA polymerase. It inhibits the activity of the enzyme by binding to the active site and blocking access to the template DNA strand. Methyl 5-bromo-4-methoxy-2-methylbenzoate has been shown to inhibit cell proliferation in culture. This compound has also been shown to be effective against a range of serotypes, including H1N1, H3N2, and H5N1 influenza viruses. The optimization of this molecule for use as an antiviral drug is currently being investigated by Novartis.
