Product Information
Volvaltrate B is an antitumor agent that is structurally related to valepotriates. It is a cytotoxic drug that inhibits the growth of cancer cells by interfering with their ability to repair DNA damage. Mechanistic studies have shown that Volvaltrate B binds to the enzyme telomerase and prevents it from adding additional telomeres to the ends of chromosomes. This leads to cell death and tumor regression in animal models of colorectal carcinoma. Telomerase inhibition has also been shown to be neuroprotective, as it reduces neuronal cell death caused by oxidative stress and inflammation, which are implicated in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
