It has been shown to have a high affinity for the fatty acid-rich surface of membranes and is therefore capable of transporting mRNA into cells. Heptatriacontane has been shown to inhibit the replication of hepatitis C virus in cell cultures, and to inhibit the growth of bacteria by disrupting membrane integrity. Heptatriacontane also stimulates the production of fatty acids, which can be used as biodiesel.
