Laurifoline is a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid that belongs to the group of aporphine. It is extracted from the Chinese herb, Liriope platyphylla. The biological properties of laurifoline have been studied extensively and it has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on endothelial cell proliferation and profiled for its ability to protect against fungal infections. This compound has also been shown to have an inhibitory effect on smooth muscle contraction and to be active in vitro against a number of bacteria and fungi. Laurifoline possesses a molecular weight of 262.2 g/mol and chemical formula C13H19NClO2. It has two chiral centers with the configuration (R) at both positions, which can be found in different stereoisomers. The structure of laurifoline can be seen in figure 1 below:
