It is prepared by the elimination of diethyl oxalate from diethyl acetoacetate with sodium hydroxide. Diethyl malonate reacts with propiolic acid to form 1,3-diethyl 2-cyclopropanecarbonylpropanedioate. This compound can also be prepared by reacting ethyl chloroformate with propiolic acid. The elimination reaction of diethyl malonate and propiolic acid yields 1,3-diethyl 2-cyclopropanecarbonylpropanedioate and water.
