2-Methylaminobenzamide (2MAB) is a fluorescent compound that can be used to detect the presence of an anthranilic acid. 2MAB is prepared by reacting methylamine with benzoyl chloride and hydrochloric acid to form an amide in the tautomeric form. This compound has been shown to have neuroprotective properties and also inhibits the metabolic pathway of aromatic amino acids, which may play a role in Alzheimer's disease. 2MAB is also used in the preparation of other fluorescent compounds.
