Mercury(II) fluoride is a substance that has the ability to stabilize molecules. It also reacts with nucleophilic groups, like acetonitrile and chlorine, to form mercury(III) chloride. Mercury(II) fluoride is used in organic synthesis as a catalyst for acetonitrile and chlorine reactions. This reaction mechanism is called the trifluoromethylthiolation reaction. Mercury(II) fluoride can be used to coat surfaces and create high-lipophilicity coatings due to its monofluoride nature.
Mercury(II) fluoride can be used as a radioisotope for medical imaging because of its long half-life and low emission rate of gamma rays.
