4-(Methylsulfanyl)butanoic acid is an organic solvent that is used in the production of butyric acid and butyronitrile. It is also a reaction product of inorganic acids, such as sulfuric acid, hydrogen sulfate, and nitric acid. 4-(Methylsulfanyl)butanoic acid has a crystalline structure and optical properties that are similar to those of acetic acid. This compound is expressed in plasmids and can be used as an amide or metal chelate. The enzymatic methods of 4-(methylsulfanyl)butanoic acid are supplementing with hydrogen sulfate or recycled by adding an acid catalyst.
