2',3',4,4',5-Pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB) is a polychlorinated biphenyl that is used as an industrial chemical and has been detected in the environment. It induces chaperones such as GRP78 and HSP70, which are proteins that help cells to survive under stress conditions. PCBs bind to fatty acid receptors, causing an increase in epidermal growth factor (EGF). PCBs also inhibit P450 activity and induce sephadex g-100 binding protein 78 (Grp78) and biphenyl. This may be due to their ability to form a covalent bond with the hydroxyl group on Grp78 and biphenyl.
