Cajanin is a component of the Chinese herb Curcuma aromatica that has been used traditionally in China as an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant. Cajanin is a lipophilic molecule, which may be due to its fatty acid content. Cajanin has been shown to inhibit HIV infection in human cells by interfering with viral entry or replication. The mechanism of action has not yet been elucidated, but it may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of mitochondrial membrane proteins. This molecule may also have antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi, as well as cytotoxic effects on cancer cells.
