The compound also inhibits the growth of other gram-positive pathogens, such as Propionibacterium acnes and Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Ethyl 1-acetylcyclopropane-1-carboxylate binds to the enzyme DNA gyrase, which is required for bacterial replication and transcription. This binding prevents DNA from unwinding during replication and transcription, which leads to cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis.
