1-(tert-Butoxy)-2-propanol is a glycol ether with the chemical formula CH3CH2OCH2CH(OH)CH3. It belongs to the group of industrial chemicals and has been shown to be carcinogenic in animal studies. 1-(tert-Butoxy)-2-propanol is used as an intermediate for the synthesis of other compounds, such as polybutylene terephthalate, polyethylene terephthalate, and polyvinyl chloride. The toxicity of this compound has been studied in vitro using human liver cells and in vivo using animals. In vitro assays revealed that 1-(tert-Butoxy)-2-propanol causes cytotoxicity and genotoxicity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA repair enzymes or affect protein synthesis.
