Nisoxetine hydrochloride is a prodrug of nisoxetine, which is an antidepressant drug. It is used to treat depression and lowering the risk of suicide in patients over 18 years old. Nisoxetine hydrochloride is metabolized by hydrolysis of the ester bond in the liver, yielding nisoxetine as the active form. The enantiomers are metabolized differently, with only one being active. This means that if a patient takes both enantiomers, they will not receive the desired effects.
