Description:5α-Hydroxycostic acid is a sesquiterpene lactone that has been shown to have antiangiogenic effects. It inhibits protein synthesis and cell division, leading to significant cytotoxicity in cells. 5α-Hydroxycostic acid has been shown to inhibit the phosphatase activity of the angiogenic process and to be used as an antiangiogenic therapy for cancer treatment. This compound also inhibits growth factor (e.g., vascular endothelial growth factor) expression, leading to decreased angiogenesis and reduced tumor size in mouse models of cancer. 5α-Hydroxycostic acid also inhibits angiogenesis by reducing the production of chemokines such as monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1).
