Description:

BDE-183 is a polybrominated flame retardant that is used in polyurethane foam, plastics, and textiles. It can be found in the environment as a result of its use and disposal. BDE-183 is an environmental contaminant that has been detected in the blood plasma of humans and animals. BDE-183 has been shown to cause genotoxic effects in vitro, such as DNA strand breaks. BDE-183 has also been shown to have toxic effects on the body mass index (BMI). This may be due to its ability to induce weight loss by decreasing appetite or increasing energy expenditure. The mechanism behind these effects are not known but may be related to its ability to alter fatty acid metabolism and/or disrupt lipid metabolism pathways.
