(±)-1-(4-Bromophenyl)ethyl isocyanate is a basic dye that is used in the production of other dyes. It can be synthesized by reacting phenylhydrazine with aniline, followed by chlorination. This compound has been shown to be toxic to human liver cells and homologues in rats and mice. It is also fluorescent, with a maximum excitation wavelength at 595 nm and a maximum emission wavelength at 614 nm. (±)-1-(4-Bromophenyl)ethyl isocyanate has been used as an indicator for the detection of aminobenzyl, which can be used as a probe for DNA damage and repair. The sodium salt of this compound has been shown to react with alkali metals, forming yellow dyestuffs.
