5-Methyl-2-piperazinone HCl is an efficient synthetic intermediate that can be used for the synthesis of amines, cyclization, and reductive coupling. It is prepared by the reaction of methyl piperazine with aqueous hydrochloric acid to give 5-methyl-2-piperazinone. The chemical structure of this compound consists of a benzene ring substituted with two methyl groups at the nitrogen atom. This chemical intermediate can be used in reductive coupling with amines to produce secondary amines or in reductive coupling with alcohols to produce primary amines.
5-Methyl-2-piperazinone HCl also reacts efficiently with carbonyl compounds in an amination reaction to produce tertiary amines.
