Phenylmercury nitrate is a chemical substance used as a preservative in ophthalmic drugs. It is used in the treatment of inflammatory diseases, such as chronic and allergic conjunctivitis, by inhibiting the production of prostaglandin. Phenylmercury nitrate can also be used to treat blepharitis, an inflammation of the eyelid margins, which is caused by bacteria that live on the skin around the eye. The most common side effect of this drug is redness and swelling of the eyelids. Other side effects include blurred vision and pain or discomfort when wearing contact lenses.
