Pyrantel tartrate is an anthelmintic drug that is used to treat infections caused by roundworms and other intestinal worms. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of infections with both adult and immature stages of the parasite. Pyrantel tartrate has a broad-spectrum of activity against different species of parasites, including tapeworms, hookworms, ascarids, and pinworms. Pyrantel tartrate is also active against Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm), Ancylostoma caninum (dog hookworm), Ancylostoma braziliense (cat hookworm), Toxocara cati (dog ascarid), and Toxascaris leonina (cat ascarid). The drug is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and distributed throughout the body. It is metabolized into pyrantel, which has a lower therapeutic index than pyrantel tartrate.
