1-Butylhydantoin is a hydantoin primer that is used in amplification reactions. It has been shown to bind to Mn2+ ions and immobilized primers, making it an effective primer for PCR. 1-Butylhydantoin has a high affinity for the 3' end of DNA and can be used as a primer for cloning. 1-Butylhydantoin also has an amino acid sequence that is different from other primers, which may allow it to bind more efficiently to certain sequences. 1-Butylhydantoin has been found in alkaliphilic bacteria such as Bacillus cereus and Bacillus megaterium, which indicates that it may have a higher efficiency at these conditions. 1-Butylhydantoin also displays biochemical properties similar to dihydropyrimidinase, an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of pyrimidine nucleotides.
