2-Propyl-(E)-2-pentenoic Acid (PEPA) is a fatty acid that can be synthesized from gamma-aminobutyric acid. It has been shown to have anticonvulsant properties in epileptic patients and has a serum concentration of 0.5-1.0 µg/mL. PEPA is an isomer of citric acid, differing by the presence of a double bond at the 2-position and the presence of an ethyl group on the terminal carbon chain. It is also chemically similar to amide, which has a methyl group on the terminal carbon chain instead of an ethyl group. PEPA has been recycled from nipecotic acid, which was originally synthesized from chloroacetic acid, with magnesium chloride as a catalyst and magnesium sulfate as a co-catalyst. Pharmacokinetics studies have shown that PEPA is metabolized by hydrolysis to form acetate, which may be converted back
