Decarboxy ciprofloxacin is a prodrug that is active against bacteria and other microorganisms. It has been shown to have an affinity for the fluoroquinolone binding site on the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Decarboxy ciprofloxacin has been used in animals to treat infections caused by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella enterica, Proteus mirabilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Decarboxy ciprofloxacin is administered orally in the form of tablets or capsules. The drug binds to metal ions and can be detected with a biosensor that uses an aptamer-coated electrode. This sensor can be used for the detection of both metal ions and fluoroquinolones.
