Acetaldehyde ammonia trimer (AAT) is a stable and efficient monomer for the preparation of poly(perfluorooctanoate) (PFOA) of high molecular weight. Reaction of AAT with perfluorinated monomers leads to the formation of water-soluble PFOA oligomers, which are then polymerized to give an insoluble polymer. The synthesis of AAT is achieved by reacting acetaldehyde with ammonia in the presence of a chloride and hydroxide solution. The reaction products include hydrochloric acid, ammonium chloride, and ammonium hydroxide. Acetaldehyde ammonia trimer is soluble in water and reacts efficiently with perfluorinated monomers to generate polymers.
