Ethyl 2-anilino-4-oxo-4,5-dihydro-3-furancarboxylate is a reactive compound that inhibits the mitochondrial membrane potential. It also has anti-tumor and anti-proliferative activities. This compound's membrane potential inhibitory effect is due to its ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a mitochondria membrane. ROS are toxic and can lead to cell death. The anti-proliferative activity of ethyl 2-anilino-4-oxo-4,5-dihydro-3-furancarboxylate may be due to its ability to activate caspase 3.
