Dihydroresveratrol is a polyphenol found in grapes, red wine and peanuts. It has been shown to have antioxidant properties and may be involved in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Dihydroresveratrol has also been proposed as an antimicrobial agent against various bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus pyogenes. Dihydroresveratrol binds to bacterial DNA polymerase and inhibits the synthesis of bacterial DNA by binding to the enzyme's active site. In vitro assays have shown that dihydroresveratrol can inhibit melanogenesis in human cells by binding to tyrosinase, an enzyme responsible for the production of melanin. Dihydroresveratrol also has physiological effects on humans including blood pressure monitoring and skin cancer prevention.
